The loss of a child is one of life’s most devastating blows. Sweet Callaway Hope lived 45 minutes in her precious mama’s arms before slipping into the arms of Jesus. The grief is crushing and the heartbreak of facing the future without your child is overwhelming, leaving a hole in your heart that will miss her until you see her again in heaven.
Perhaps life has handed you a crushing blow. A job loss, a health crisis, the death of a loved one, an unwanted divorce. Suddenly you fear tomorrow, barely able to make it through today. It feels like God has abandoned you, that he no longer hears or answers your prayers. You fear the future, unsure of how you will face the loneliness and emptiness that engulfs you today and looms in your tomorrows.
But God – The Lord – is There
In the book of Ezekiel, the people of Israel were handed a series of crushing blows. They were taken into captivity and the glory of the Lord departed from His temple. The people were discouraged, fearing that God had abandoned them. But the prophet Ezekiel gave them hope. He described the new city of Jerusalem that would one day be restored to unimaginable glory and to which the captives would one day return. In Ezekiel 48:35 he gives the best news of all, that God will dwell in this city and that the name of this new city will be:
Yahweh Shammah – The Lord is There
Like many prophecies, this one has layers of fulfillment, both present and future. The book of Revelation describes the New Jerusalem that will one day descend from heaven with inconceivable brilliance and splendor.
The Lord will dwell there with his people
But friends, we can claim this promise today as our very own because God – the Lord – is here. God is with us, wherever we are, because he dwells in believers through the Holy Spirit.
Immanuel, God with us, is Here
He never promises an easy path; in fact, he guarantees suffering, but he also guarantees that his presence will never depart from us as he walks with us each step of the way.
The Lord is here
He is the God of your yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows, and nothing can separate us from his love. Have you ever noticed this phrase in the oft-quoted Romans 8:28-29?
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future…nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV)
You don’t have to be afraid of your future, for Yahweh Shammah, the Lord is there. He loves you and will never leave you or abandon you.
What do you fear today? What are you most afraid of tomorrow? He goes before you and promises his very presence.
Trust Yahweh Shammah with all of your tomorrows, for he is already there.
